The project to develop a new district park in the Inshes area of Inverness. The park area is approximately 32.5 hectares (80 acres) and is divided into three parts by Stevenson Road and the Milton Of Leys link. However the three parts will be linked across Stevenson Road by a safe crossing and across Milton of Leys route by a footway/cycleway bridge.

A proposed path system includes a main network of combined footpath and cycle ways (2m width) and a secondary footpath only system (1m width). The main route will be a lit safer route to school combined footpath and cycleway.

The proposed planting and grass regime reflects the need to minimise maintenance costs and to reinforce the semi-natural pattern of existing vegetation. Ecological diversity will be supported through block planting of appropriate native tree and shrub species.

It is hoped that the local schools will be encouraged to take an educational interest in the progress of biodiversity in their park.

History/Background
The district park is identified in the Inverness local plan and developer contributions have been received to provide a basis for funding the development of the site.  The work has been planned by The Highland Council planning department and their landscape architect.

Planned Outcomes

  1. The project will enable the local community to access the district park from a variety of different locations.
  2. The district park will provide a variety of functions which meet the needs of the local community, including path networks, picnic area, safer route to school and educational facilities.
  3. The park will fit with and contribute to the delivery of the greenspace strategy and action plan and Inverness local plan.
  4. The park will be used by the majority of surrounding residents as well as attracting people from other areas of the City and beyond.
  5. The surrounding community and primary school will be involved in the development of the area.
  6. It is hoped that funding will be attracted from a variety of sources in order to provide a variety of greenspace uses in the district park area.
