Inverness High School Quadrangle

Project Summary

To transform a barren tarmac school quadrangle into a vibrant multi-purpose area with different gardens and a stage. Pupils will be involved at all stages in the design of the various areas and the end result will be an area which contains a vegetable garden, a herb garden, an alpine garden, a primary schools garden,a Scottish garden and a garden for the senses. There will also be a raised stage and seating area for outdoor performances and it is hoped that the area as a whole will be integrated into the curriculum by teachers.

History/Background

This quadrangle currently an under utilised, barren tarmac enclosed area which has access from the school and via a canopied walkway. The school, which has set up a charitable trust to take forward future projects, has plans to revitalise the area and approached GreenINverness for help with costing work and to secure funding . GreenINverness have been able to assist with the costing of the initial design that was developed by the school, and will help manage the project once funding is approved. The School grounds have an area of portakabins which are used a a training centre for the Highland Council. Parts of the playing field grounds are proposed for residential development.

Aims and Objectives

To create a vibrant, multi-purpose recreational activity and educational facility which is used and enjoyed by staff, pupils and the local community.

Project Outcomes

The involvement of pupils in open air learning, biodiversity projects and the outdoor environment through the creation of theme gardens that creates a setting for a stage area, and to encourage increased horticultural interest and recreational activity out of doors.
