Dalneigh Trailblazers

Project Summary

The project involved development of a 1500m sealed surface multi-use activity trail linking with the pathsinverness network and providing easy access from the local community to the facilities on the trail.

An original consultation with the local community identified the need to create better use of their existing greenspace which consists of former allotments and playing fields.

The path, funded by Greenspace Scotland, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and Scottish Government Cities Growth Fund, provides an all year access facility and links to the wider networks around the City. The installation of the trail will enable further development of activity nodes along the path. One of these activity nodes, a multi use games area has been installed as part of the project.  The play area was officially opened by HRH Prince Andrew in March 2007.

History/Background
The project was a community initiative generated through extensive consultation and supported and led by the Dalneigh and Columba Community Council.  greeninverness applied for a grant to support the path work element of the project to regenerate the areas of the old allotments and playing fields, replacement of the disused BMX track and creation of a new activity space in the form of a multi-use games area.

Outcomes Achieved

  1. The project has improved access for the local community and visitors to local and wider greenspace through the creation of an all ability sealed surface path, connecting to pathsinverness network.
  2. The project meets the needs expressed by the community for the development of their local greenspace by:
    - providing access to walkers, cyclists and the disabled
    - creating greater use of the existing playing fields
    - providing easier access to facilities within the playing areas and to the Caledonian Canal.
  3. The creation of the path has opened up the area for all year use to all ages and abilities.
  4. By improving links to the wider network of paths around Inverness the project has made the area more accessible and is expected to generate additional ideas for the further development of activity nodes in the future.
  5. Located close to the community and local primary school, the new trail facilities will encourage young people to participate in sport and play at the activity areas and to use the path for cycling and walking to the school and community centre.
  6. The whole project has been developed to address the priorities and needs of the local community, who have been involved through consultation and appraisal processes. The project has satisfied some of the communities key priorities and will make a significant improvement to quality of life in this area.
  7. The community centre and community council are committed to the project and are likely to manage the use and further expansion of the facilities. Already the paths are well used by locals and it is hoped that through publicity and the regeneration of the playing fields, the area will become a major resource in future sports and recreational activities within Inverness.
  8. The pressure on existing greenspace in the centre of the city is likely to see an increase demand for improvements at this site.  The project has highlighted the potential for the regeneration of the neighbouring garden nursery area that has fallen into disuse and this is currently being looked at for potential improvements.
  9. By providing better facilities in this inner city area it is hoped not only to engage the local community, but also to bring others into the area to see the improvements that can be made by a pro-active community.
