South Kessock Environmental Enhancements

Project Summary
This project has regenerated the area in and around South Kessock and Merkinch and includes a number of community led initiatives at the Westfield and Carnarc Point.
The aim was to engage the community in revitalizing and attracting visitors to the area. The work was assisted through Greenspace Scotland and local funding, with professional support to enable the community to tackle more technical landscaping issues.
History/Background
Merkinch Greenspace (formerly South Kessock Environmental Company) has been operating for more than 10 years in the area. It is run by enthusiasm from the community and a full time Project Officer. In Novemeber 2004 a very successful Conference titled 'Moving Forward' attracted Charles Kennedy as a key note speaker, and was successful in identifying the priorities for action. Following an environmental week in held March 2005 which saw a number of projects being tackled, including drystane dyke training, clean ups and regeneration work at Carnarc Point and in the Westfield.
greeninverness has supported the initial work in the area by providing the community tool club with resourses to enable the community to take an active part in environmental work. It has been successful in attracting £20,000 funding to undertake the current initatives completed in April 2006, which included the restoration of green area at Carnarc Point and the improvements of paths and signage in and around the Westfield.
Planned Outcomes
- The project will improve accessibility by enhancing path networks and seating areas. The wooden causeway at Westfield will be refurbished in the summer with access to the boardwalk improved as it is subject to flooding and the path can be very muddy.
- The area will be more attractive to local people and visitors.
- Children and adults will be involved in improving their local greenspace through taking part in environmental work and activities.
- The project will contribute to the wider Community Arts work in the area.
Outcomes Achieved
- A range of improvements have increased and improved the accessibility of the area for local people and visitors:
- Completion of clearance work, including final root removal and levelling.
- Installation of amenity seating and a picnic table at Carnarc Point.
- Installation of additional seating at the view point near the old ferry terminal.
- Improvement works, including overgrown scrub clearance and selective thinning and the installation of signs welcoming the public to the Westfield area, has resulted in making greenspaces in South Kessok and Merkinch more welcoming and attractive to everyone.
- A community workshop involved local people in prioritising and decision making about the area and what could be done to improve the greenspaces. The community have also been involved in producing the interpretive panels which are placed at Carnarc Point. These panels provide information about the history, heritage and wildlife that are a feature of the community and the Ferry.
- A Big Art project planned for the Carnarc Point area did not come to fruition but it is a priority area for this type of work and the idea will be revisited in the future.
